My Journey to the Promised Land….

Our Detour

on May 31, 2012

Thank you for continuing on the journey with me!  At this point in our journey, Jeff is now officially self-employed & we are VERY excited to see what God has planned for us.  So excited that we quickly moved forward & left someone behind….God!  Oh we prayed & prayed prior to our leap of faith, but once we knew that our will was in accordance to God’s, we thanked Him & headed out on our way.  A way that we thought was on God’s path, but soon found out, it was not God’s path but a detour we inadvertently took.

As you may remember, Jeff formed his own company & called it Canaan Industries.  Jeff immediately went to work thinking of ways to drum up some business & set up a meeting with another company.  For the sake of not slamming anyone on this blog I will just refer to them as “the company”.  “The company’s” business was one that Jeff could partner with.  Jeff could do his lights & “they” could do their business & split the profits accordingly.  It SEEMED like a good plan.  But had we consulted on the Lord & not ourselves we would have realized IT WAS NOT!!!!  Here are some verses that we missed as a result of not being in the Word & seeking HIM & HIS will for our journey.

Psalm 25:12 Who, then, is the man that fears the Lord?  He will instruct him in the way chosen for him.

Psalm 32:8   I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;  I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.

Psalm 37:5-7 Commit your way to the Lord;  trust in Him and He will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.  Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 15:22 Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.

James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

Words of wisdom we should’ve mediated on when taking that first step of our journey.  Instead, we relied on our wisdom & fell short.  Jeff ended up partnering with “that company” & they formed their own company.  Canaan Industries was put on the back burner & a new company was born.

This is what I now refer to as the Sarah effect.  Like Sarah we believed God.  She believed God would grant her a son, we believed God called Jeff to quit his job & start his own company.  Sarah got off God’s path by having Hagar intercede for her with the birth of Ishmael.  We got off God’s path by forming this new company & putting Canaan to the side.  Neither new plan was a part of God’s will or promise.  Two faithful & believing people who both temporarily lost their way…

For the sake of keeping this a post & not a novel I’m not going to go into the nitty-gritty of the mess we created.  I will say that Jeff was taken advantage of by “the company” & He lost ALL profit that HE alone had acquired while in business with them.  Basically, we had 6 months worth of income wiped away & were left with NOTHING….that’s right, NOTHING!

We sought multiple lawyers to try & re-coup what we lost but were told in a nutshell that the money was gone & we’d lose more just for them to prove that.   Of course NOW we started praying & seeking God’s will.  After much prayer, Jeff & I both came to the conclusion that God was saying…LET IT GO!  It was money not earned by Canaan Industries, but through this new company which was not apart of God’s plan.

We knew God was disciplining us for getting off His path & following our own.  We knew we had to get back on His path. And that’s what we did, although this time our path was a different path then the one God had originally planned.  It was a much harder more difficult one.   Our trial had begun & we were now entering into the wilderness while continuing on to Canaan…..

  1. Hi Kim. I love that you are sharing your journey here. It’s so encouraging and I know others facing similar situations will be so blessed too. My bible study has been talking about fearing man, when our fear is to be of the Lord only. Love the verses you shared. Blessings Friend…
